Interval Station is a biophilic transit center for the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center campus. Conceived as a "space between," it gives healthcare workers and daily commuters a deliberate pause between the pressures of a shift and the return to private life, rather than just a place to catch a train.
Instead of functioning as a typical transit hub, the station works as a sensory sanctuary. Open-air atriums, immersive green space, and abundant natural light are used deliberately to lower cortisol and calm travel anxiety, before a shift begins and after it ends.
Vehicular infrastructure is sequestered to the south: a one-way drop-off loop handles car and bus traffic in a single zone, while a separate service route reaches the loading dock directly. Clearing vehicles from the core axis reclaims the central corridor entirely for pedestrians, prioritizing foot safety and linking the station, parking, and surrounding landscape into one continuous path.
The southern facade uses a fiber-cement panel rainscreen to balance solar exposure across different programs: large glazing at the first floor invites natural light into public areas, while opaque panels shield upper-level offices from heat and glare. That passive strategy is paired with a roof-mounted solar array to make the most of the building's southern orientation. The building also harnesses wind power, channeling surplus energy into onsite battery storage, and collects rainwater runoff to sustain its greenery and internal systems with recycled water.
